SOCIB participated actively on PERSEUS FP7 Scientific Workshop

SOCIB, IMEDEA and IEO researchers and engineers participated actively on PERSEUS FP7 project General Assembly and Scientific Workshop in Athens 26-29 January 2014. SOCIB activities were featured by different speakers, related to the SOCIB multi-platform approach (Pierre Poulain), gliders new capabilities for routine monitoring (Emma Heslop) and monitoring under extreme atmospheric conditions and process studies (Pierre Testor), the role and possibilities of operational oceanography for stock assessment (Javier Ruiz for anchovy in Alborán Sea) and Bluefin Tuna spawning areas (Patricia Reglero), science to society approaches and stakeholders involvement (David March).

Some of the first results of the Perseus Project were presented, linking ocean physical variability, through biogeochemical processes and interaction, to key current society issues, including eutrophication, jellyfish distribution and commercial fish populations. Highlighting the importance of ocean monitoring systems in providing a base of data to support societies needs. Looking beyond Perseus, a discussion was started as to advance to define and establish an optimized European long-term observing strategy for the Mediterranean and Black Sea, to support of science priorities, respond to society needs and enhance technology development.
