HCMR (Hellenic Centre for Marine Research) visit to SOCIB Glider Facility

On Monday 14th of April, 2014, Leonidas Perivoliotis, Dimitris Kassis and Paris Pagonis  (HCMR, http://www.hcmr.gr/en/) visited SOCIB installations with the objective to learn from SOCIB experience with gliders. The morning session was dedicated to the glider facilities at IMEDEA: laboratories, workshop, storage, ballasting tank, pressure chamber and control room, with specific explanations on mission setup, piloting, data and recovery by Joaquín Tintoré and Marc Torner. An overall view of the Engineering and Technology Division facilities (ETD) was given by Benjamín Casas.

The afternoon session took place at SOCIB headquarters, where the Data Center facility was presented, with a detailed description of the data flow at SOCIB, from sensors to quality-controlled data files and dynamic images available in near-real time. In addition, the new Matlab/Octave processing toolbox (http://socib.es/users/glider/glider_toolbox/) was introduced by Joan Pau Beltrán. The visit concluded with a round-table discussion about the glider performance, maintenance and data processing. Visitors were given a 360º overview of the integral fleet and data management carried out by SOCIB as one of the leading European glider groups. Finally, and after the positive and constructive feedbacks from SOCIB’s guests, important collaboration pathways were drawn for the short- and mid-terms in terms of RT and DM data exchange.
