Euroregion Representatives visited SOCIB headquarters

Mr. Jean Claude Gayssot, Vice President of International and European Relations of the Languedoc-Rousillon Government, accompanied by the Vice President of European Affairs, International Relations, Decentralized Cooperation and Reflection on the Future of Regions, Mr. Gérard Onesta of the Midi-Pyrénées Government, and Mr. Francesc Homs, Minister of Presidency and Foreign Affairs of the Catalonia Government, together with Mr. César Pacheco, General Director of Institutional Relations and Mr. Miquel Bernat, BIT Foundation Manager, visited SOCIB headquarters on October 27th, 2014.

SOCIB team presented the ongoing activities with particular emphasis on the role of science, technology development, and innovation to advance towards knowledge based management of our oceans and coasts. Some examples of the innovative tools developed at SOCIB and showed during this visit are:

  • Forecasting models and tools for search and rescue operations, oil spill tracking in the ocean and implementation of decision support tools to establish the coastal response
  • New technologies such as underwater gliders for routine monitoring of our oceans and coastal areas
  • Smartphones apps for real time visualization of oceans and coasts data (temperature, currents, etc...)
  • Tools for decision support: e.g., Search and Rescue operations, Oil spill forecast and impact on the coast (Sa_Costa viewer), Beach monitoring systems related to beach safety, etc.
  • Indicators and methodologies to advance towards real science based sustainability by establishing equilibrium points between environmental, economical and societal goals
  • Sustainable fisheries and bluefin tuna science based management
  • Data management at SOCIB, real time data available, catalogue, visualization, download, etc.
