SOCIB takes part in the Ocean Sciences Meeting 2024 sharing capabilities and knowledge in ocean dynamics
- The Ocean Sciences Meeting (OSM) is the flagship conference for the ocean sciences and the larger ocean-connected community.
From February 18 to 23, 2024, the Balearic Island Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB) has taken part in the Ocean Sciences Meeting 2024 (OSM24) by sharing its work in marine research, being part of the more than 6000 attendees. This event, held every two years, is organized by the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the Association for Sciences, Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) and the Oceanographic Society (TOS). The OSM unifies the ocean’s community to share findings, connect scientists from around the world, and advance the impact of science. Thus, it has been the ideal setting for SOCIB to present its work, explore new frontiers in ocean science, uncover new research and share knowledge of our interconnected ocean.
In particular, SOCIB has contributed in disseminating the capabilities and most relevant and recent findings of the Glider Fleet and Modelling and Forecasting Facilities in the frame of the CALYPSO, FRIPP and FaST_SWOT projects. Specifically, SOCIB has contributed to the Submesoscale Ocean Dynamics and Vertical Transport sessions, and has presented the first results from the NASA's first global survey of Earth's surface water, providing data for clean air and water, extreme events, and long-term environmental changes: SWOT. In fact, the OSM24 has shown challenges to understanding marine heat waves, lagrangian transport, novel techniques in data assimilation, high-resolution observations, and the role of meso- and submesoscale dynamics in subduction processes.
